Free agency season is here! With Aljamain Sterling due to announce the plans for his future this evening, Alistair Overeem today announced via his Twitter page that he has signed a new contract with the UFC.

A former DREAM and Strikeforce heavyweight champion, Overeem has been a force in the heavyweight division since moving up in weight during his PRIDE career in the mid-2000’s.

It wasn’t until 2011 though that Overeem finally landed in the UFC where he memorably tore Brock Lesnar apart in his debut.

A failed drug test and three losses in four fights followed that but in the last 18 months Overeem has seen his career somewhat revitalised with a move to Greg Jackson’s gym and wins over Stefan Struve, Roy Nelson and Junior Dos Santos.

Now, with a new contract in toe, “The Reem” can’t be too far away from a first shot at the UFC heavyweight title.
