The long awaited light-heavyweight title fight between Jon Jones and Alexander Gustafsson, scheduled to take place at UFC 178, has been cancelled. The rematch of the 2013 fight of the year has been scrapped due to a knee injury suffered by Gustafsson.

Instead, #2 ranked Daniel Cormier steps in to fight champion Jones. Cormier is a former Olympian who boats an impressive 15-0 record as a professional with wins over Roy Nelson, Frank Mir and Dan Henderson since his transition from the now defunct Strikeforce.

Jones (21-1) has been unflappable in the UFC beating the likes of Shogun Rua, Rashad Evans and Quinton Jackson along the way. Cormier, though, is likely to be his toughest test to date and will look to utilize his elite wrestling game against the lanky New Yorker.

The pair have traded words since Cormier moved down to light heavyweight last year with both sides getting heated along the way.

UFC 178 is set to take place on Sept. 27th at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada and also features the return of former bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz against Takeya Mizugaki as well as Irish superstar Conor McGregor’s first trip to sin city as the Dubliner faces Dustin Poirier.
