The long awaited light-heavyweight title fight between Jon Jones and Daniel Cormier, scheduled to take place at UFC 178, came early as the champion and challenger came to blows at a media day in Las Vegas today.

Journalists on the scene reported that Cormier pushed Jones before the champion retaliated with a punch. A huge melee ensued with both men being separated.

#2 ranked Daniel Cormier stepped in to fight champion Jones after Alexander Gustafsson was stricken with a recent knee injury. Cormier is a former Strikeforce heavyweight tournament title holder and has a 15-0 record as a professional.

Jones (21-1) is unbeaten in the UFC apart from a disqualification against Matt Hammil and has taken down former champions like Shogun Rua, Rashad Evans and Quinton Jackson along the way.

The pair have traded words since Cormier moved down to light heavyweight last year with both sides getting heated. Nobody, though, would have expected them to come to blows this early.

UFC 178 will take place on Sept. 27th at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada (the same venue as today’s fight) and also features Irish star Conor McGregor’s first trip to the fight capital of the world as the Dubliner faces American Dustin Poirier.
