The highly anticipated light-heavyweight title fight between Jon Jones and Daniel Cormier, scheduled to take place at UFC 178 on September 27th, has been postponed following an injury to the champion. The fight will now take place on January 3rd at UFC 182.

Number 2 ranked Daniel Cormier had stepped in to fight Jones following an injury to original challenger Alexander Gustafsson and lead one of the most heated build ups to a fight in the history of the company.

The pair had traded words since Cormier moved down to light heavyweight last year with both sides getting heated along the way. That lead to huge brawl at the press outing to announce the event where Cormier pushed Jones before the champion replied with a left hook and all hell broke lose.

Cormier is a former Olympian who boats an impressive 15-0 record with wins over Josh Barnett, Roy Nelson, Frank Mir and Dan Henderson in his combined Strikeforce and UFC career.

Jones (21-1) has been even more impressive in the UFC beating former champions Shogun Rua, Rashad Evans, Quinton Jackson and more in his historic run as champion. Cormier, though, was fancied to be his toughest test to date.

UFC 178 will now be headlined by flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson vs. Chris Cariaso and is set to take place on Sept. 27th at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The card also features the return of former bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz against Takeya Mizugaki as well as Irish superstar Conor McGregor’s first trip to sin city as the Dubliner faces Dustin Poirier.

UPDATE from FoxSports: “Sources speaking to FOX Sports indicated that it was an ankle and knee injury believed to be a torn meniscus that forced Jones out of the fight against Cormier on Sept 27.  Neither are severe enough to warrant surgery, but it will put the champion on the sidelines until he can return early next year.”
