The inquest into the death of mixed martial artist Joao Carvalho has begun. Carvalho died soon after competing against Charlie Ward at a MMA event at The National Stadium in Dublin, Ireland back in April 2016.

RTE reported on the inquest earlier today and revealed Joao’s brother Alexandre was the first to speak to the inquest and that he revealed that Joao was taken off life support after doctors pronounced him brain dead.

According to the State Pathologist Marie Cassidy, Joao died after head injuries caused bleeding inside of his skull.

RTE also reported that it was revealed at the inquest that Joao walked out of the cage after the bout but then became drowsy and started to vomit in a small medical room backstage.

When the medics eventually got Carvalho into the Red Cross ambulance after some difficulty getting past the people outside of the venue’s medical room, Joao reportedly ended up on the floor of the ambulance and was diverted to the Mater Hospital where an operation was performed but failed to save his life
