McGregor on Twitter: “I accept” Rematch with Poirier on January 23rd

Speaking to ESPN’s Brett Okamoto on Wednesday, UFC President Dana White confirmed that he has offered Conor McGregor a fight with Dustin Poirier on January 23, 2021.

“We offered him a fight, we got him his own date”, said White. “We didn’t have a date this year. We have everything laid out for this year, with world champions fighting for titles. He wants to fight Dustin Poirier apparently, so we went to ESPN and got him his own date.

“He’s been offered Dustin Poirier on Jan. 23. It’s a yes or no answer.”

McGregor originally accepted the fight but wanted the bout to be held on either November 21, December 12 or December 19. He also generously offered to donate $500,000 to Poirier no profit organisation ‘The Good Fight Foundation‘.

Dana White was not playing ball when pressed about why he can’t promote a McGregor fight in 2020.

That’s not how it works,” White stated. “We laid out this year. He was retired. Would anybody disagree he was retired? Through this crazy pandemic year we’re going through, we faced a lot of challenges.”

“There were a lot of things done to make this thing work. We made it happen. We have our schedule laid out. Fighters have committed to it. Fighters have started training for these fights.

“Conor came back and wants to fight Dustin, so we went out and got him his own date. It’s January 23.”

What followed was lots of speculation online as to why White is refusing McGregor’s request but all that speculation was put to bed with a single tweet from the former double champion.

In response to White, McGregor tweeted, “I accept, Jan 23rd is on! My goal is to see this fight take place in Cowboy stadium. Proper Style! Jerry Jones is a friend and the stadium can hold our crowd. I will be ready for Texas and Texas will be ready for my fans! Then Manny.”

The bout itself has not been made official by the UFC as of yet. The weight limit and where the bout takes place will hopefully be ironed out in the coming weeks. All parties are interested which is a tell tale sign that we are close to an official announcement. Although in MMA, it’s never done until it’s done.
