Conor McGregor goes on Twitter rampage following UFC 264

With UFC 265 supposedly being perhaps the biggest fight in Conor McGregor’s career, it should be fairly unsurprising to find that the MMA star hasn’t taken his defeat too calmly. This is because the Irish fighter has gone on something of a Twitter rampage recently. MMA fans have been treated to the sight of McGregor blasting everything from his rivals to the parents and children of other fighters.

Such trash-talking is hardly new in the MMA realm, but it seems that the 33-year old is keen to take things to the next level. So is this all a ploy to keep McGregor in the headlines or is the fighter just keeping himself amused? 

Following the defeat to Dustin Poirier, it would be hard to find online bookmaker on wetten.com who’d give you short odds for McGregor to bounce back from such an ugly defeat. But by examining the Irish star’s tweets, we can see that there are plenty of reasons to be hopeful about a McGregor resurgence. 

McGregor’s Twitter tirades

It’s fair to say that McGregor didn’t handle his defeat by Poirier very well. The dust had barely settled on the UFC 264 bout before the Irishman was already hard at work filling Twitter with threats about the things that he would do to Poirier’s wife and family. Such ugly outbursts seem to indicate that McGregor is something of a bad loser, as he was nothing but complimentary about Poirier when he KO’d the US star last February.

However, McGregor hasn’t stopped there. This being the weird world of MMA, it was only a matter of time before Khabib Nurmagomedov got involved and the Russian star was quick to join in the battle. This saw Nurmagomedov simply stating that ‘good’ triumphs over ‘evil’, perhaps in reference to Poirier’s victory over McGregor. 

Having a bitter rival like Nurmagomedov get involved was clearly too much for a volatile character like McGregor. The Irish star immediately went on a foul-mouth Twitter rampage in which he did everything from threaten to eat Nurmagomedov’s children to mocking the Russian legend’s recently passed father. 

Such tweets were felt to have gone too far with Nurmagomedov’s coach calling McGregor a ‘flat out idiot’. To be fair the Irishman has been quick to delete the majority of his controversial tweets, but it does suggest that McGregor might be better served by staying away from social media.

Is McGregor’s star on the wane?

For some, McGregor’s social media activity is just the habits of a flamboyant character letting off some steam. However, many people in the MMA world have been suggesting that McGregor’s increasing fondness of Twitter outbursts is merely a reflection of his decreasing talents as a fighter.

The latest defeat by Poirier was a sobering blow for McGregor who, at 33-years of age, will realise that time is against him. As such, the Irish fighter will know that now is the time to either decide whether he should go down with dignity or get evermore outrageous with age. 

Seeing as McGregor has been arrested everywhere from Florida to Corsica, it’s pretty easy to see which route is the most likely option. However, there are some small examples of how we could soon be seeing more of a sharing and caring Conor McGregor. After all, his surprisingly classy tweet to Jose Aldo suggests that the Irish fighter is willing to accept that he’s not the only legend in the world of MMA. But whether that kind-hearted tweet was just a one-off remains to be seen.
